University of Zakho Launches “Pink October: Breast Cancer Awareness” Campaign

Date: October 27, 2026

The University of Zakho has officially launched its “Pink October: Breast Cancer Awareness” campaign, organized by the Zakho Center for Sustainable Development Goals (ZCSDG) and the Directorate of Health and Safety, in collaboration with the College of Medicine at the University of Zakho and the Independent Administration of Zakho.

The campaign will continue until the end of October, aiming to raise public awareness of breast cancer, promote early detection, and encourage preventive health practices.

Campaign Activities and Community Outreach

As part of the campaign, awareness-raising activities are being conducted at two key locations: the University of Zakho campus and a dedicated awareness booth situated on Delal Bridge in Zakho.

To reach a wider segment of the community, digital awareness messages are being displayed on the digital screens at Zakho Corniche and White Mall, ensuring that essential health information is accessible to the public.

The campaign also incorporates digital health education through a Quick Response (QR) code, enabling individuals to access detailed information about breast cancer, including warning signs, breast self-examination, risk reduction, and the importance of seeking professional medical advice when necessary.

This digital approach reflects the university’s commitment to promoting digital health awareness and ensuring that reliable health information is accessible to the wider community.

Why Is Breast Cancer Awareness Important?

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), approximately 2.3 million women worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. In Iraq, 8,626 new cases of breast cancer among women were recorded in the same year, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Iraqi women.

These figures underscore the importance of public awareness, early detection, and timely access to medical care in addressing the burden of breast cancer.

Commitment to Public Health and Sustainable Development

Through this initiative, the University of Zakho reaffirms its commitment to public health, community education, and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

By integrating campus engagement, community outreach, and digital communication, the campaign seeks to empower individuals with essential health knowledge, encourage greater awareness of breast cancer, and promote the dissemination of potentially life-saving information among families and communities.

The University of Zakho remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen health literacy, encourage preventive care, and contribute to building a healthier and more informed society.
